India's Stance on US Trade Deal: No Rush, Only National Interest

India's Trade Negotiation Strategy
New Delhi: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized on Friday that India will not rush into any trade agreements based on arbitrary deadlines. The country will only consider the proposed trade deal with the United States once it is thoroughly finalized and aligns with national interests.
Goyal mentioned that India is actively pursuing free trade agreements (FTAs) with various nations, including the European Union, New Zealand, Oman, the US, Chile, and Peru.
He stated that FTAs should be mutually beneficial, ensuring a win-win situation for both parties involved, particularly in the context of the proposed interim trade agreement with the US.
"The national interest must always take precedence. If a deal is reached that serves our interests, India is open to negotiations with developed nations," Goyal remarked.
When questioned about the possibility of an interim trade agreement by July 9, he reiterated, "India does not engage in trade deals based on deadlines. We will accept a deal only when it is properly concluded and in the best interest of the country."
Currently, there are no plans for him to visit Washington for trade discussions.
