Significant Growth in India's Services Sector

New Delhi: The services sector in India has experienced its most robust growth in four months, driven by strong demand that has positively impacted business activities and new orders, according to a recent monthly survey released on Wednesday.

Businesses displayed a cautious optimism regarding future prospects, although job creation was at its lowest in four months. The growth in international sales was noted to be the weakest in nearly four years.

The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Services PMI Business Activity Index increased from 55.2 in September to 55.8 in October, indicating a notable growth rate.

In PMI terminology, a score above 50 signifies expansion, while a score below indicates contraction.

Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC, commented, "India's services PMI reached 55.8 in October, marking a four-month high as business conditions improved cautiously. Despite strong overall demand, new export orders saw their slowest growth since February 2023."

Survey respondents highlighted new business growth as the primary factor contributing to the rise in output, with favorable demand conditions, new client acquisitions, and effective advertising efforts boosting new order intakes.

On the pricing front, there was a notable decrease in cost pressures. Bhandari noted, "Input and output prices continued to rise, but at a slower rate than the previous month, indicating some relief from inflationary pressures."

Employment growth also decelerated to its weakest level since June, suggesting that some businesses in the service sector have enough capacity to meet current staffing needs.

Despite this, companies remained cautiously optimistic about future growth, with job creation at its lowest in four months.

In addition, India's composite PMI rose to 56.2 in October from 55.9 in September, reflecting the fastest increase in overall output in four months and indicating healthy business activity.

The report stated, "New business intakes at the composite level also grew at a faster rate, the most significant since June. However, job creation slowed, and businesses were less optimistic about growth prospects compared to September."

Cost pressures diminished in both manufacturing and service sectors, leading to a decline in the overall inflation rate to an 11-month low.

Composite PMI indices are calculated as weighted averages of the manufacturing and services PMI indices, with weights reflecting the relative sizes of these sectors based on official GDP data.

S&P Global compiles the HSBC India Services PMI based on responses from approximately 400 service sector companies.
