Introduction to the MLFF Tolling System

New Delhi, Dec 17: The implementation of the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling system, along with AI-driven highway management, is expected to be finalized by the end of 2026. This initiative aims to virtually eliminate delays at toll booths for drivers, as reported in Parliament on Wednesday.

During a session in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, confirmed that these advancements will significantly reduce waiting times at toll plazas.

The innovative MLFF system will allow vehicles to pass through toll booths at speeds reaching 80 km/h without any hindrance.

Goals and Technology Behind MLFF

Gadkari emphasized, "Our aim is to achieve zero waiting time." He elaborated that the system will utilize a blend of AI-based license plate recognition, satellite tracking, and FASTag integration to automatically identify vehicles and collect tolls.

The minister assured that the MLFF initiative will be fully operational on national highways by 2026. Once implemented, it is expected to prevent toll revenue losses, enhance traffic flow, and decrease travel time.

Benefits of the New System

In response to additional questions during the session, Gadkari reiterated that the new technology is AI-driven. Commuters will no longer face delays at toll plazas, which will contribute to fuel savings and increase government revenue.

He stated, "The MLFF is an excellent facility. Previously, toll payments took between 3 to 10 minutes; with FastTag, this duration has reduced to under 60 seconds. Our revenue has surged by approximately Rs 5,000 crore. With the MLFF, vehicles can now pass through tolls at speeds of up to 80 km/h without stopping."
