India's GST Collections Surge in June 2026 Driven by Import Revenues
Strong Growth in GST Collections
In June 2026, India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections exhibited impressive growth, with total revenue increasing by 13.9% year-on-year to reach Rs 1,94,812 crore. According to provisional data from the Finance Ministry, this growth was primarily fueled by a significant rise in tax revenues from imports, which outpaced the growth of domestic revenues for the month.
Net GST collections, after accounting for refunds, also showed robust growth, amounting to Rs 1,62,377 crore in June 2026, marking an 11.2% increase from Rs 1,45,984 crore in the same month last year. The latest figures indicate a growing disparity between domestic tax collections and those generated from imports.
Domestic GST revenue reached Rs 1,34,774 crore in June 2026, reflecting a 6.5% increase compared to Rs 1,26,506 crore collected in June 2025. In stark contrast, GST collections from imports surged by 34.6%, totaling Rs 60,038 crore, up from Rs 44,600 crore in the same month last year. This data underscores the crucial role of import-related tax receipts in enhancing the overall GST collections for the month.
Refund disbursements also saw a significant rise in June, with the government issuing refunds totaling Rs 32,436 crore, a 29.1% increase from Rs 25,121 crore in June 2025. For the financial year up to June 2026, gross GST collections reached Rs 6,31,699 crore, reflecting an 8.4% increase over Rs 5,82,542 crore recorded during the same period last year.
During this timeframe, domestic GST collections grew by 2.8% to Rs 4,54,427 crore, while GST revenue from imports surged by 26.2% to Rs 1,77,273 crore, further emphasizing the stronger contribution of imports to overall tax growth. Total refunds for the financial year so far amounted to Rs 91,482 crore, leading to net GST collections of Rs 5,40,218 crore.
Maharashtra Tops State Collections
Maharashtra Leads State-Wise Collections
The state-wise breakdown of domestic GST collections revealed a varied performance, with some states showing significant gains while others faced declines. Maharashtra retained its position as the leading GST contributor among states, with domestic collections rising by 9% to Rs 30,714 crore in June 2026, up from Rs 28,248 crore a year earlier.
Karnataka and Gujarat also reported impressive double-digit growth, collecting Rs 12,937 crore and Rs 11,743 crore, respectively. Uttar Pradesh demonstrated one of the strongest performances, with GST collections increasing by 19% to Rs 9,165 crore.
However, not all states experienced growth. Sikkim saw the most significant decline, with collections plummeting by 53% to Rs 170 crore from Rs 364 crore in June 2025. Puducherry's collections fell by 28% to Rs 172 crore, while Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand reported declines of 26% and 21%, respectively. Tamil Nadu also experienced a slight decrease of 2%, with collections dropping to Rs 9,776 crore from Rs 9,963 crore in the same month last year.
