Phased Launch of India's Bullet Train

New Delhi: The inaugural bullet train service in India is set to commence in phases starting August 15, 2027. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that the Surat-Bilimora segment of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor will mark the country's first high-speed rail route.

The 508-kilometer corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be launched in stages, allowing certain sections to operate before the entire route is completed. After the Surat-Bilimora stretch, additional segments such as Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane, and Ahmedabad-Mumbai will be progressively opened.

Vaishnaw shared that the bullet train project has reached a significant milestone, with the construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor moving forward as planned, starting with the Surat-Bilimora section.

According to the Railway Minister, approximately 80% of this ambitious project is already finished, with construction advancing swiftly to meet the scheduled timeline. This high-speed rail corridor is anticipated to drastically cut travel time between the two major financial centers while introducing cutting-edge rail technology and enhancing regional connectivity. Additionally, it is expected to stimulate economic development along the route.

The Minister also discussed the government's long-term vision for expanding the high-speed rail network, announcing three proposed bullet train corridors focused around Hyderabad. These routes include Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Chennai, and Hyderabad-Bengaluru, which aim to improve connectivity throughout southern India. Furthermore, a high-speed rail link between Hyderabad and Mumbai is also in the works, promising to significantly reduce travel time between these cities.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allocated three high-speed bullet train corridors to Hyderabad, which will transform its landscape," Vaishnaw stated, emphasizing that the proposed network will cover extensive areas of Telangana and enhance connectivity across various districts in the state.

The Minister also pointed out the ongoing railway modernization efforts under the station redevelopment initiative. As part of the Nav-Nirmaan program, 261 railway stations nationwide are being upgraded with modern passenger facilities and enhanced infrastructure. In Telangana, significant stations such as Secunderabad, Begumpet, and HITEC City are among those undergoing redevelopment.
