Economic Stability Amidst Challenges

Despite facing short-term challenges such as rising crude oil prices, a weakening rupee, and ongoing foreign selling, India's economic fundamentals remain robust. According to the latest Market Outlook from PL Wealth, the projected GDP growth for FY26 stands at 7.7%, while the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has adjusted its FY27 forecast to a more conservative 6.6%. The PMI readings for manufacturing and services in June 2026 were 54.2 and 57.4, respectively, indicating continued expansion, albeit at a slightly moderated pace compared to May.

Credit growth for both businesses and households has maintained a healthy rate of 17.7% year-on-year, resulting in an outstanding credit book of Rs 215.15 trillion. Additionally, factory capacity utilization is reported at 75.2%, surpassing long-term averages. However, inflation risks are on the rise, with the RBI increasing its FY27 Consumer Price Index (CPI) estimate to 5.1%, anticipating a spike to 5.9% in the third quarter. Factors contributing to market volatility include persistently high crude prices, ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, and a structurally weakened rupee, which is now hovering around the 94.5–95 mark against the dollar.

External Economic Resilience: In June, the RBI's monetary policy committee adopted a cautious approach, maintaining the repo rate at 5.25% while revising its inflation forecast upwards and lowering growth expectations. This strategy reflects a 'higher-for-longer' stance. India's external reserves remain substantial, with forex reserves amounting to USD 667 billion, sufficient to cover approximately 10.5 months of imports. GST collections for June 2026 saw a significant year-on-year increase of 13.9%, reaching Rs 1.95 lakh crore, marking the highest monthly figure in over a year, driven by strong import-related collections.

On the trade front, agreements with the UK, New Zealand, EFTA, and Oman are now active, while the EU Free Trade Agreement awaits finalization, and discussions for a bilateral trade deal with the US are ongoing. The report also highlights the monsoon as a critical factor to monitor, with El Niño conditions present and June rainfall tracking about 40% below seasonal norms.

Market Valuation Insights: The report indicates that short-term earnings projections are under pressure, with profit forecasts for FY27 being revised downwards across sectors such as banking, consumption, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and utilities, although FY28 estimates appear more stable. While there has been increased participation in mid- and small-cap stocks over the past six months, the market rally is still predominantly driven by a limited number of sectors. The Nifty 50 index closed at 23,946 at the end of June 2026, reflecting a 6.5% decline year-on-year. Domestic institutional buying has helped mitigate the effects of ongoing foreign selling.

Gold Market Dynamics: The transition of gold from a currency hedge to a core reserve asset is progressing, despite experiencing its largest quarterly decline since 2013. By the end of June, gold prices had fallen to approximately USD 3,940–4,044 per ounce but rebounded to the USD 4,150–4,180 range in early July following a weaker US jobs report. PL Wealth anticipates that gold will trade within a range of USD 3,900–4,400 per ounce in the near term, supported by continued central bank purchases. Silver prices are expected to remain volatile, fluctuating between USD 60–65 per ounce, with any significant movement dependent on a resurgence in investment demand.
