Market Overview

Representational Image

Mumbai, Oct 31: The Indian stock market experienced a robust recovery this week, with equity benchmarks rising nearly 2% due to renewed interest from foreign institutional investors (FIIs), declining bond yields, and encouraging domestic earnings reports.

Weekly Performance

The Nifty index increased by 2% over the week, closing at 23,053 after a 0.51% rise on the final trading day. The Sensex also saw a gain of 308 points, or 0.42%, finishing at 74,459, marking a weekly increase of 1.83%.

Market Drivers

According to analysts, the Indian equity market's upward trend was supported by lower crude oil prices and easing bond yields, which boosted investor confidence. While central banks like the Fed, ECB, and BoJ maintained their interest rates, their cautious stance on inflation tempered expectations for immediate monetary easing.

Sector Performance

Broader market participation improved, with mid-cap and small-cap stocks outperforming their large-cap counterparts. However, the market sentiment turned cautious towards the weekend due to renewed tensions in West Asia, which led to a rise in crude prices and profit-taking across the market, although the benchmarks managed to retain their weekly gains.

Pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors led the gains this week, driven by positive earnings reports, while the real estate sector benefited from lower bond yields. The metals, FMCG, and automotive sectors also saw gains due to expectations of reduced input costs, whereas cement and oil & gas sectors lagged behind.

Investor Activity

During the week, foreign institutional investors net purchased shares worth Rs 6,304.67 crore, while domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 3,109.79 crore.

Broader market indices outperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap100 rising by 2.69% and the Nifty Smallcap100 advancing by 4% over the week.

Market Outlook

Brent crude prices closed the week near $7 per barrel, with the upcoming OPEC+ review anticipated for indications of potential supply adjustments.

Domestically, the manufacturing and services PMI readings will be crucial in assessing whether business activity can maintain its momentum amidst high energy costs and tighter financial conditions.

Investors are also focused on US PMI, employment data, and the outcomes of the US midterm elections as significant factors influencing global risk appetite, while domestic PMI and Q2 earnings will guide stock-specific movements.

Immediate resistance for the Nifty is identified in the 23,175–23,285 range, with support expected at 22,750–22,800. The Bank Nifty must close above 55,150 to strengthen the bullish outlook, with 53,780 identified as a critical support level, according to analysts.
