Market Overview

Representational Image

Mumbai, Oct 14: The domestic stock market started on a subdued note on Wednesday as investors balanced supportive local indicators against ongoing global challenges.

Index Performance

The Nifty index opened at 22,715.75, reflecting a decline of 6.20 points or 0.03 percent. In contrast, the Sensex began at 73,049.76, gaining 15.98 points or 0.02 percent.

Sector Performance

Sector-wise, the performance was varied, with technology stocks leading the way. The Nifty IT index was the top performer, climbing over 1 percent, followed by Nifty MidSmall IT & Telecom and Nifty FMCG, which rose by up to 0.38 percent.

On the other hand, Nifty Consumer Durables saw a decline of 0.67 percent, while healthcare indices faced pressure, dropping by up to 0.6 percent.

Market Insights

Market analysts noted that the sharp increase in the Nifty on Tuesday was unexpected in an otherwise weak market, primarily driven by short-covering activities.

The surge was triggered by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's comments regarding a careful review of stakeholder feedback on the long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and securities transaction tax (STT), which raised hopes for potential policy adjustments and improved investor sentiment.

Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India's recent actions to mitigate currency market speculation have contributed to a nearly 1.5 percent appreciation of the rupee over the last two trading sessions.

Caution in the Market

Despite these positive developments, caution remains as the US 10-year Treasury yield hovers around 5.2 percent, and Brent crude oil prices are near $6 per barrel, both seen as significant challenges for equity markets.

While these factors may restrict the sustainability of the rally, analysts believe sectors like financials, telecom, metals, and automobiles could show resilience, anticipating strong second-quarter earnings.

Technical Analysis

Technically, the recent uptick has rekindled hopes for a move towards the 23,200 level. Analysts have observed that the index is nearing a congestion zone that could impede further upward momentum. Immediate support is identified around 22,550, while a decisive breakthrough above the 22,787-22,880 range could bolster bullish sentiment.

Asian Markets and Oil Prices

Asian markets rebounded after two days of losses, buoyed by expectations that the US Federal Reserve may take a less aggressive stance on interest rate hikes in the coming year.

Crude oil prices have also risen as traders evaluate supply risks linked to conflicts involving Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi Arabia, while keeping an eye on the potential for increased Russian diesel supplies to global markets.
