Mumbai, October 7: The equity market experienced a downturn on Wednesday, ending a two-day upward trend. This decline followed the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) decision to increase the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5 percent, indicating a shift towards a "calibrated tightening" monetary policy, which negatively impacted investor confidence.
Index Performance
The Sensex dropped by 429.11 points, or 0.59 percent, concluding at 72,638.70, while the Nifty index fell by 173.05 points, or 0.76 percent, to finish at 22,603.05.
Technical Analysis
Experts analyzing the Nifty's technical position noted that it fell below the 22,700 mark, closing near the critical support level of 22,600. A sustained drop below this threshold could lead to further declines towards 22,400, while 22,800 is identified as the initial resistance point for recovery.
Investor Sentiment
Investor caution prevailed following the RBI's announcement, which hinted at a tighter interest rate scenario in the future.
Sector Performance
Among the Nifty stocks, Titan Company, BEL, and Hindalco Industries were the biggest losers, contributing to the decline of the benchmark indices. The metal sector faced significant selling pressure, pulling the overall market down.
In the broader market, the Nifty MidCap 100 index fell by 0.63 percent, indicating weakness among mid-cap stocks. Conversely, the Nifty SmallCap 100 index managed to rise by 0.30 percent, defying the overall trend.
Sector Analysis
Sector-wise, the Nifty Metal index was the day's poorest performer as investors reduced their stakes in metal stocks. On the other hand, the Nifty PSU Bank index outperformed other sectors, ending the day with gains and providing some market support.
Future Outlook
Market analysts suggest that participants will closely observe the effects of the RBI's policy changes on economic growth, liquidity, and corporate earnings in the upcoming months, as the central bank aims to manage inflation.
Looking forward, attention will shift to the earnings season for the September quarter, which will provide further market direction. While a strong macroeconomic environment supports optimistic expectations, investors will be keen on management insights regarding their ability to manage rising input costs, maintain pricing power, and sustain demand in the latter half of the fiscal year.
