Indian Stock Market Closure on Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti
Market Closure Details
The Indian stock market, including the BSE Sensex and Nifty50, will observe a closure on Tuesday, April 13, in honor of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti. This means that trading activities across equity, derivatives, and other segments will be halted for the day. However, the commodity exchanges will operate under a different schedule. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India, which is the largest platform for non-agricultural commodities in the country, will be closed during the morning session but will reopen later in the day, with trading resuming from 5 pm to 11:30 pm. On the other hand, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange, which specializes in agricultural commodities, will remain closed for both trading sessions. Regular trading activities on these platforms will recommence on Wednesday, April 15.
Upcoming Market Holidays in 2026
Looking ahead to 2026, traders should be aware of several upcoming market holidays. The next closure is scheduled for May 1, in celebration of Maharashtra Day, followed by another on May 28 for Bakri Eid. The latter half of the year will also see multiple holidays, including Muharram on June 26, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, and Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. Additionally, the markets will be closed for Dussehra on October 20, Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, and Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24. The last holiday of the year will be Christmas on December 25.
Flexibility in Exchange Holidays
Market participants are advised to stay vigilant for any updates, as exchanges have the discretion to modify the holiday calendar. Any changes will be communicated through official announcements ahead of time. Last year, there was a similar adjustment when an extra holiday was added on January 15 due to the Mumbai BMC elections, and markets were also closed on January 26 for Republic Day. Earlier this year, Indian markets observed several holidays in March, including Holi on March 3, Shri Ram Navami on March 26, and Shri Mahavir Jayanti on March 31.
