Indian Railways Greenlights New Third Line to Boost Capacity

New Delhi, July 23: The Indian Railways has sanctioned the development of a 14.52 km third railway line connecting Nimpura West Outer Cabin to Midnapur within the South Eastern Railway zone, with an investment of Rs 440 crore. This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of this heavily trafficked corridor, as stated in an official announcement made on Thursday.

This project is part of Indian Railways' ongoing strategy to increase network capacity on routes with high traffic density, thereby enabling quicker transit for both passenger and freight services. This is crucial for meeting the rising transportation demands of various industries and essential goods, according to the statement.

Once completed, the new line is projected to support an additional freight movement of 3.52 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

The section is included in the High Utilisation Network (HUN-2), where the current Nimpura West Outer Cabin-Gokulpur segment operates as a single line, although doubling efforts are already underway. The introduction of this third line will significantly enhance line capacity and operational flexibility on this vital corridor, as detailed in the announcement.

This route handles a considerable amount of passenger and freight traffic, transporting essential commodities such as manganese, iron ore, containers, coal, clinker, pellet iron, iron and steel, wheat, stone, sleepers, slag, salt, rice, petroleum products, limestone, gypsum, fertilizers, edible oil, chemical salt, charcoal, cement, ballast, and ash, with an overall freight loading nearing 23.80 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

The current line is operating at a capacity utilization rate of 115.71%, indicating significant congestion. The addition of the third line will provide the necessary capacity to manage the increasing passenger and freight traffic, while also enhancing operational efficiency throughout the corridor.

The upgraded infrastructure will facilitate the movement of essential goods, alleviate operational bottlenecks, boost network reliability, and enhance connectivity for industries and businesses reliant on this crucial rail corridor.
