Indian Markets Surge as Oil Prices Drop Amid Easing US-Iran Tensions

On July 27, 2026, the Indian stock market opened strongly, with both the Nifty and Sensex experiencing significant gains. This positive momentum was driven by easing tensions between the US and Iran, leading to a notable drop in oil prices. The Nifty rose over 150 points, while the Sensex jumped more than 500 points. Additionally, the Indian rupee strengthened against the dollar. Analysts suggest that if crude oil prices stabilize, foreign investors may increase their buying activity in India. Despite previous market volatility due to rising oil prices and geopolitical concerns, the current developments have sparked optimism among investors.

Market Overview

On July 27, 2026, both the Nifty and Sensex kicked off the trading week on a positive note. Investors reacted favorably to the de-escalation of the US-Iran conflict, which contributed to a 5 percent drop in oil prices. At the market's opening, the Nifty rose by over 150 points, reaching 23,928.40, while the Sensex surged more than 500 points to open at 76,608.98. Additionally, the Indian rupee appreciated by 41 paise, starting the day at 96.15 against the dollar, compared to the previous close of 96.56.

Brent Crude oil prices were reported below $93 per barrel during this period. Following the significant decline in crude prices, oil-sensitive sectors experienced notable gains of 2-3 percent in early trading. G. Chokkalingam, Head of Research at Equinomics Research, commented on the situation, stating, "The halt in hostilities between the US and Iran has instilled optimism in the Indian equity markets. Spot crude oil prices have also seen a correction of over 5 percent in the last three days. Furthermore, net foreign portfolio investment (FPI) inflows have turned positive in July, contributing to a favorable market response that is expected to continue this week."

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, previously noted, "Should crude oil prices continue to decline and stabilize, foreign portfolio investors are likely to become consistent buyers in India. Thus, monitoring crude prices is essential." The markets had a challenging and volatile week prior, with benchmark indices extending their losses due to a sharp rise in crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical tensions, which dampened investor sentiment. Despite resilient domestic macroeconomic indicators and ongoing earnings season providing stock-specific opportunities, the elevated energy prices and global uncertainties overshadowed these positives in the preceding week.
