India Denies Reports of Russian Oil Tanker Heading Towards Its Shores

India has officially denied reports of a Russian oil tanker changing course towards its shores, despite conflicting information from global sources. A senior government official stated that there is no confirmed data regarding such a vessel's rerouting. This clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny of crude oil trade flows due to geopolitical tensions. While a Bloomberg report suggested a tanker was en route to New Mangalore, Indian authorities have pushed back against these claims. Clarification on Russian Oil Tanker Reports

India has officially stated that it lacks any verified information regarding a Russian oil tanker purportedly altering its course towards Indian waters, despite conflicting global reports. This clarification emerges amid heightened scrutiny of crude oil trade flows due to geopolitical tensions and changing supply chains. A senior government representative addressed the issue, refuting claims that a tanker carrying Russian crude is on its way to India. Rajesh Kumar Sinha, the special secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, emphasized that there is no confirmed data regarding such a vessel's rerouting to India, as reported by ET.

This statement stands in stark contrast to a Bloomberg report released earlier, which indicated that a ship carrying Russian crude had changed its course from China and was heading towards India. The report, based on ship-tracking data, suggested a potential arrival at New Mangalore within days. It noted that vessels like the Aqua Titan are now expected to dock at New Mangalore, carrying Urals crude that was initially loaded in the Baltic region. The tanker had originally set Rizhao in China as its destination but altered its route while navigating through Southeast Asian waters.

Analytics firms such as Kpler and Vortexa have reported that several tankers transporting Russian crude have modified their destinations mid-journey. These changes are thought to be connected to evolving demand patterns and shifting trade priorities.

India’s Strategic Energy Security Initiatives

India has historically relied heavily on Middle Eastern oil. However, the ongoing instability in the region has necessitated a strategic reassessment. According to Vortexa Ltd., at least seven vessels have diverted their routes from China to India. In just one week, Indian refiners have procured nearly 30 million barrels of Russian crude. This proactive purchasing strategy underscores a broader initiative to mitigate disruptions and ensure supply continuity. Currently, major refiners across India are actively sourcing Russian oil to stabilize their operations.
