Strengthening Bilateral Ties

India and Venezuela have reiterated their dedication to enhancing bilateral collaboration, with a significant focus on energy security during high-level talks on June 4. These discussions occurred during the visit of Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, who was accompanied by a senior ministerial team and engaged in official meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As per Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon, the dialogues underscored the increasing strategic relevance of the partnership, especially as Venezuela has emerged as a key supplier of crude oil to India. The visit included formal discussions and a working lunch hosted by the Prime Minister.

Energy was highlighted as the primary area of collaboration between the two nations. Tandon emphasized Venezuela’s expanding role in India's energy landscape, noting that it has become the third-largest supplier of crude oil this month. He mentioned that the discussions were centered on establishing a robust energy partnership.

Discussing the complementary strengths of both countries, Tandon remarked on the ideal synergy for collaboration in the energy sector, encompassing both upstream and downstream activities. He noted that Venezuela views India as a reliable market and a stable demand partner for the foreseeable future.

Exploring Opportunities Beyond Oil

While energy was a focal point, both nations also explored avenues to enhance economic cooperation. Tandon characterized Venezuela as a "large, resource-rich country" and highlighted its potential across various sectors.

He pointed out significant opportunities not only in energy but also in mining, animal husbandry, transportation, agricultural machinery, automotive, and pharmaceuticals. The discussions aimed at identifying ways for Indian firms to increase their footprint in these sectors and leverage emerging prospects as Venezuela strives for sustained economic development.

Businesslike Discussions Reflect Strong Ties

Tandon described the interactions as "very businesslike and substantive," emphasizing the mutual trust and shared ambition to bolster cooperation. He noted that the Venezuelan delegation recognized India’s consistent support over the years, stating that India has been a steadfast ally during both challenging and prosperous times.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Venezuela regards India as a "preferred partner for the future," indicating confidence in the long-term development of their bilateral relations.

Comprehensive Review of Relations

Earlier that day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Acting President Delcy Rodriguez engaged in extensive discussions covering energy, trade, investment, and various other sectors. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the interests of the Global South.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared insights from the meeting on X, stating, "PM @narendramodi held extensive discussions with Acting President Delcy Rodriguez of Venezuela today. The leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and explored new avenues for cooperation in energy, trade, investment, healthcare, and automobiles, among others."
