Income Tax Department Issues Warning on Misleading Emails Regarding Advance Tax

Clarification from the Income Tax Department

The Income Tax Department has alerted taxpayers to ignore certain emails concerning 'significant transactions' that have been circulated as part of their advance tax outreach initiative. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) communicated via X that some recipients received emails with incorrect or inconsistent information regarding high-value financial transactions associated with them. This issue emerged during the Advance Tax e-Campaign for the assessment year 2026-27, which corresponds to the financial year 2025-26. Officials are currently addressing the matter in collaboration with the service provider managing the communication system.

The CBDT stated, 'We are diligently working to rectify this situation with our service provider. Meanwhile, we kindly ask taxpayers to disregard the previous email communications related to the Advance Tax e-Campaign for AY 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26).'

Upcoming Advance Tax Deadline

This clarification is particularly timely as March 15 is the deadline for the fourth installment of advance tax for the financial year 2025-26. Typically, advance tax payments are made in several installments throughout the year by individuals and businesses whose tax liabilities exceed the specified threshold. The reminders sent through the e-campaign aim to encourage taxpayers to assess their financial activities and ensure timely tax payments. Authorities emphasized that these communications are designed to promote voluntary compliance rather than act as enforcement notifications.

According to the CBDT, these alerts serve as reminders to assist individuals in verifying their financial transactions and ensuring that their advance tax calculations accurately reflect their income and tax responsibilities.

Verification of Details Recommended

Despite the inaccuracies in some emails, the tax department has urged taxpayers to independently verify their financial information through official channels. The board clarified that the e-campaign's goal is to assist taxpayers in cross-checking transaction records held by the tax department and reviewing their advance tax status before the payment deadline. Taxpayers can find the necessary information in the e-Campaign section on the Compliance Portal, accessible via the official e-Filing website. By logging into the portal, individuals can examine the details of transactions reported to the tax authorities and take necessary actions to ensure compliance with advance tax obligations. Officials stressed that taxpayers should depend solely on verified information from the government’s official tax platforms while the email discrepancies are being addressed.
