Transformative Aluminium Projects in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: Vedanta's ambitious aluminium initiatives, estimated at ₹1 lakh crore, are set to create over 200,000 direct and indirect job opportunities. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized the urgency of advancing these projects, which aim to position Odisha as a premier aluminium production center, following a meeting with Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal.
During their discussion at Lok Seva Bhawan, they reviewed the progress of Vedanta's proposed ₹1 lakh crore aluminium venture in the state.
Majhi highlighted the significant potential of these projects for job creation and local development, assuring that the state government would provide comprehensive support for investments in the aluminium sector.
The talks also centered on expediting project timelines and enhancing collaboration between the industry and government to propel Odisha into its next phase of industrial growth.
Agarwal noted that Vedanta has already invested ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha and is prepared to invest an equivalent amount for a new refinery in Rayagada and a smelter in Dhenkanal.
Additionally, he suggested establishing a 1,000-bed hospital in the western part of the state.
Vedanta operates a refinery in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi district, along with a smelter and power plant in Jharsuguda, which is part of the western region.
When questioned about local opposition to bauxite mining at Sijimali in Rayagada, Agarwal acknowledged that resistance is common. He stated, 'Opposition is natural. We must engage with the community to foster a developed Odisha and India. Two decades ago, external influences stirred opposition among locals, but now the situation has stabilized.'
The proposed projects include a cutting-edge aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal with a capacity of 3 million tonnes per year and an alumina refinery in Rayagada with a capacity of 6 million tonnes annually.
Majhi asserted that these initiatives would not only elevate Odisha but also position India as a global leader in aluminium manufacturing.
Upon completion, Vedanta's total aluminium production capacity will rise to 6 million tonnes per annum, addressing the increasing demand for aluminium in India.
