Guwahati and North Lakhimpur Recognized for Cleanliness

Guwahati, July 17: In the recent Swachh Survekshan Awards for 2024-25, Guwahati and North Lakhimpur have been acknowledged as the leading cities in Assam, earning the title of 'Promising Swachh Sheher'.

The awards ceremony took place on Thursday at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, where Guwahati's Mayor, Mrigen Sarania, was present.

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took to social media to celebrate this achievement, highlighting Guwahati's status as the cleanest capital in the Northeast, following its certification as Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus and receiving a 1-Star Garbage Free City (GFC) rating.

He remarked, "This is a testament to Assam's ongoing commitment to urban sanitation and public health. The city is making significant strides in cleanliness and development,".

The Chief Minister acknowledged the contributions of Guwahati's residents and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in enhancing the city's cleanliness rankings.

Mayor Sarania shared similar sentiments, stating that this recognition is a product of coordinated efforts, public engagement, and awareness. He referred to the award as a motivation to foster a transparent, green, and inclusive Guwahati.

Official statistics reveal that Guwahati has made impressive gains in its national ranking within the 3–10 lakh population category, jumping from 402 out of 448 cities last year to 44 out of 95 this year, placing it in a commendable position.

Additionally, Guwahati joins other AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) cities in Assam, such as Silchar, Nagaon, and Dibrugarh, in achieving a 1-Star GFC ranking for the first time.

North Lakhimpur also showed remarkable improvement, rising to 155 out of 820 in the 50,000 to 3 lakh population category.

This year, Assam celebrated a significant achievement with six cities receiving the ODF++ certification, a notable increase from none in the previous assessment. Nagaon and Silchar also demonstrated substantial advancements in their rankings.

These developments indicate that Assam is progressively moving towards its objective of sustainable urban cleanliness and sanitation.
