PIB Addresses Misinformation on Fuel Prices

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has intervened to dispel false claims circulating about an increase in petrol and diesel prices by the Central government. On April 29, the PIB's fact-checking team refuted these viral assertions, clarifying that no such price hike has been authorized. Social media was rife with allegations of a Rs 10 increase for petrol and Rs 12.5 for diesel. The PIB Fact Check unit promptly addressed the issue, advising the public to consult only verified government sources for accurate information. They stated, “This order is #FAKE. The Government of India has NOT issued any such Order. Always VERIFY such news only through official government sources,” in a post on X.

This clarification is crucial as misleading information has gained momentum during a politically charged period. The announcement comes amidst heightened political discourse regarding fuel prices. Nilanjan Das from the All India Trinamool Congress accused the BJP-led government of raising fuel prices during the ongoing elections in West Bengal, labeling the action as ‘anti-people.’

As the second phase of voting takes place on April 29, the political rivalry between the TMC and BJP intensifies. Meanwhile, elections in Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu have concluded, with results expected on May 4.

Rahul Gandhi Raises Alarm Over Potential Price Increases

In related discussions, Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi has warned that fuel prices may surge following the elections. He criticized the government's management of global oil price changes, stating, “Election relief over, inflation's heat is on its way! After April 29th, watch out - petrol, diesel, everything will get expensive.” He further claimed that while crude oil prices were low, the Modi administration benefitted from the profits, and now that prices are high, the burden will fall on the public.

Global Influences on Oil Prices

Concerns about rising global crude oil prices have heightened public anxiety. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, have disrupted supply chains, especially through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite these worries, a senior government official has reiterated that there are no current plans to raise petrol or diesel prices, dismissing any speculation linked to the election timeline.
