Call for Improved Governance in Tax Services

As the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) approaches, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the need for the Income Tax department to streamline services, ensuring that citizens do not have to navigate bureaucratic hurdles. During the inauguration of the new Aaykar Sindhu building in Mumbai's Nariman Point, she expressed her concerns regarding the inefficiency of government departments, which has resulted in illegal encroachments on public land.

Sitharaman reflected on the challenges the Income Tax department faced in securing approvals for the new building, highlighting the importance of understanding the struggles of ordinary citizens when they seek assistance. She urged officials to facilitate processes for taxpayers without unnecessary complications, stating, "Do not make them run from pillar to post where your authority is required; do the work for them."

Addressing the issue of illegal land occupation, she remarked on the lax governance that allows such situations to arise, stressing the responsibility of officials to protect government assets. Additionally, she promised to address the shortage of housing for Income Tax officers in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, as many currently endure long commutes to their jobs.

In her address, Sitharaman underscored the importance of integrity in tax administration, urging officials to maintain the highest ethical standards. She stated, "Integrity is the one and only principle I will advocate to each one of you." Eligible taxpayers are reminded that they can file their returns online via the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal. Understanding the due dates, the correct ITR forms, and the required documentation is essential for a hassle-free filing experience. The deadline for filing income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27 is July 31, 2026, for individuals using ITR-1 and ITR-2, August 31, 2026, for non-audit returns like ITR-3 and ITR-4, and October 31, 2026, for businesses that require a tax audit.
