Extension of Customs Duty Exemption

The Indian government has announced an extension of the full Customs Duty exemption on the import of essential petrochemical products until July 15, 2026. Initially, this exemption was set to expire on June 30, 2026, as a temporary measure to address the disruptions in global supply chains caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. This initiative aims to ensure that there is an adequate supply of petrochemicals in the domestic market, especially since Indian petroleum companies have been directed to focus on LPG production during this period.

As conditions begin to stabilize, the government has decided to prolong this exemption for an additional 15 days, now valid until July 15, 2026. The list of petrochemical products eligible for this exemption remains unchanged, according to the Ministry of Finance. This move underscores the government's commitment to bolstering India's manufacturing sector, as the exemption is anticipated to benefit various industries reliant on petrochemical feedstock and intermediates, such as plastics, packaging, textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automotive parts, and other manufacturing sectors. Additionally, this will provide relief to consumers of the final products.
