Current Trends in Home-Cooked Meal Costs: Insights from CRISIL
Overview of Meal Costs
Despite some relief in vegetable prices, the overall expenses for home-cooked meals have not decreased as much as many households anticipated. A recent analysis by CRISIL reveals a mixed picture regarding food costs, with vegetarian thali prices remaining stable and a slight reduction in non-vegetarian meal prices. While individual ingredient prices have fluctuated, the cost of a vegetarian thali has not changed compared to the previous year. This stability is attributed to a balancing effect where increases in some items were countered by decreases in others.
Stability in Vegetarian Thali Costs
The cost of a vegetarian thali has remained unchanged year-on-year as of March, primarily due to lower prices for onions, potatoes, and pulses, which offset the rising costs of tomatoes, edible oils, and fuel. Pushan Sharma, director of Crisil Intelligence, noted that tomato prices surged by 33% year-on-year, largely due to delays in crop cycles in key producing states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Conversely, onion prices fell significantly due to an oversupply from overlapping harvests and weak export demand, while potato prices decreased due to low demand from the hospitality sector.
Slight Decline in Non-Vegetarian Meal Prices
For non-vegetarian consumers, there has been a minor reduction in meal costs, with non-vegetarian thali prices dropping by approximately 1% compared to last year. This decrease is mainly attributed to lower broiler chicken prices, which constitute nearly half of the total meal cost. Additionally, the decline in onion, potato, and pulse prices has contributed to the overall reduction in expenses. Month-on-month, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali prices have also decreased, aided by improved supply and reduced demand for certain food items.
Understanding Persistent High Food Bills
Even with some food items becoming less expensive, rising costs in other areas are offsetting these savings. Edible oil prices have risen by 6% year-on-year due to global supply issues, while LPG cylinder prices have surged by 14%, adding to cooking costs. Sharma emphasizes that global factors are significantly influencing price levels. Geopolitical uncertainties are likely to keep vegetable oil prices elevated, and onion prices may remain under pressure due to high arrivals and sluggish export demand.
Higher crude oil prices, influenced by tensions in West Asia, have also contributed to increased edible oil costs globally, affecting domestic markets. Additionally, cautious purchasing by importers has tightened supply expectations. Looking ahead, onion prices may not remain low indefinitely, as a decline in production and damage to summer crops could gradually drive prices up again, especially if exports increase or government interventions occur.
