Layoffs at ClickUp: The productivity software firm ClickUp, based in the United States, has revealed plans for substantial layoffs as it shifts towards operations driven by artificial intelligence. CEO Zeb Evans announced that 22% of the company's workforce will be impacted, framing this restructuring as a significant transformation rather than merely a cost-cutting measure. A blog post from 2023 indicated that ClickUp had over 1,000 employees, making this round of layoffs one of the largest organizational changes since the company’s rapid expansion.


In a post on X, Evans shared, “Most savings from this change will flow directly back into the people who stay. We’ll be introducing million-dollar salary bands.” He added, “If you create outsized impact using AI, you’ll be compensated outside of traditional bands.” This announcement aligns with a broader trend in the tech industry, where firms are increasingly incorporating AI tools into their operations while reducing their workforce.


Evans elaborated on ClickUp's future strategy, indicating that the company is restructuring its workforce into three categories: “builders,” “system managers,” and “front-liners.” The first two groups will concentrate on developing and managing AI-driven systems, automating aspects of their roles. Meanwhile, front-liners will maintain customer interactions, providing what Evans referred to as “the human touch.”


The CEO emphasized the company's long-term goal of achieving “100x output” through enhanced AI integration. In another social media update, he remarked, “The people that automate their jobs with AI will always have a job. They become owners of the AI systems – agent managers.” He reassured employees and industry watchers by stating, “The future is not fewer people. It’s different work, new roles, and better rewards for those who embrace it.” Reports indicate that ClickUp has already encouraged its staff to utilize AI agents and share AI-driven workflows internally as part of its evolving workplace culture.
