Impact of Legislative Assembly Elections on Banking Services
As various states prepare for legislative assembly elections, bank customers in India are seeking clarity on whether their local branches will operate on Thursday, April 9, 2026. Voting is set to commence in several areas, including Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, creating uncertainty regarding banking services in these locations. Typically, local authorities declare public holidays in regions where elections occur, allowing citizens to vote without work-related interruptions. Consequently, bank branches in constituencies where elections are being held may close for the day, contingent on local announcements.
Polling for assembly elections and by-elections is scheduled for April 9 in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. In these instances, banks located in the specific constituencies participating in the voting process are generally closed in accordance with election regulations. Nevertheless, even if physical branches are not operational, customers will still have access to vital banking services. ATMs, mobile banking applications, and online banking platforms are expected to remain functional without any interruptions.
In addition to the aforementioned states, by-elections are also planned in various constituencies across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura earlier in March. Furthermore, West Bengal will conduct polling later in the month, with two phases scheduled for April 23 and April 29.

According to the holiday calendar from the Reserve Bank of India, banks are not officially marked as closed in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry on April 9, 2026. However, the central bank has yet to provide a definitive update regarding localized closures in areas where elections are taking place. This indicates that the status of banking operations may differ based on district-level decisions, making it crucial for customers to remain informed.
Residents of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura are encouraged to directly contact their local bank branches to verify whether services will be available on polling day, as closures may vary by constituency.
Guidelines for Central Government Offices
The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (Department of Personnel & Training) released an office memorandum on April 6, 2026, detailing the protocols for central government offices during elections. It stated: “Central government offices, including industrial establishments, shall remain closed on the day of polling in the notified areas where general elections to a state legislative assembly are scheduled.” For by-elections, the regulations are more precise: “In connection with the bye-election to assembly constituencies, only those employees who are bona-fide voters in the relevant constituency should be granted special casual leave on polling day.”
