Arsenal Faces Injury Crisis as Eberechi Eze is Out for Weeks
Eberechi Eze's Injury Impact
Arsenal has encountered a major blow with Eberechi Eze sidelined for four to six weeks due to a calf injury. The midfielder was absent during the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City and is likely to miss a significant portion of April, a pivotal time for the club's season.
Manager's Update on Eze's Condition
Manager Mikel Arteta stated that additional scans will be necessary to evaluate the severity of the injury. He mentioned, "We will conduct another scan in six or seven days and await the results. It is a leg injury affecting his calf." Eze's absence is particularly concerning as Arsenal strives for success in the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League, aiming to break their trophy drought.
Additional Injury Woes
Eze's injury is exacerbated by the fitness struggles of several other key players. William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Leandro Trossard, and Jurrien Timber have all withdrawn from their national teams this month. The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed Gabriel's unavailability for upcoming friendlies against France and Croatia due to knee pain sustained after the Carabao Cup final. Imaging tests have deemed him unfit for international play.
Saliba also exited France's squad despite playing the full match against Manchester City. Trossard and Timber remain out, with Arteta indicating they may be weeks away from returning. He noted, "They [Timber and Martin Odegaard] couldn’t participate in the final, so I believe they will still need a couple of weeks. We will see after the international break if anyone returns."
FA Cup Return Prospects
Despite the mounting injury list, Arsenal anticipates the return of some players for their FA Cup match against Southampton on April 4. Odegaard is expected to be among those returning, while Saliba, Gabriel, Trossard, and Timber may also be available. The depth of the squad will be tested as Arteta navigates recovery timelines alongside the demands of competing in multiple tournaments.
Long-Term Absences and Challenges Ahead
Mikel Merino remains a long-term absentee following surgery earlier this year. His absence, coupled with Eze's recent injury, leaves Arsenal with limited midfield options during this crucial period.
The Gunners' defeat in the Carabao Cup final underscored the difficulties of competing on several fronts with a diminished squad. With critical fixtures in the Premier League and Champions League approaching in April, Eze's loss adds further pressure. Arsenal's capacity to manage injuries while sustaining momentum will be vital for their aspirations of ending a lengthy wait for silverware.
