New Delhi, July 11: Apple has initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI, a prominent artificial intelligence company, along with its hardware chief, alleging a systematic effort to misappropriate confidential information regarding future products.

The tech giant claims that OpenAI encouraged its employees to leak sensitive details, including components, designs, and other proprietary materials related to Apple's upcoming offerings, as reported by various sources.

In a lawsuit filed in California's Northern District, Apple asserts that Tang Tan, OpenAI's chief hardware officer, prompted employees to disclose information about Apple's future products during job interviews.

Tan previously served as Apple's vice president of product design, where he played a key role in the development of the iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, and other significant hardware projects.

The lawsuit also identifies Chang Liu, a former iPhone hardware engineer, who allegedly provided OpenAI with materials by unlawfully accessing numerous confidential files from Apple, which included extensive details about unreleased products and engineering presentations.

According to the lawsuit, Apple claims Liu was involved in creating hardware for OpenAI by illegally obtaining sensitive information.

Apple further alleges that OpenAI actively guided its employees on how to manage their departures to retain access to confidential files.

In response to the allegations, OpenAI has denied any wrongdoing, stating that it has no interest in the trade secrets of other companies and is committed to developing innovative technologies that benefit users globally.

Historically, Apple and OpenAI have collaborated closely, with OpenAI providing essential technology for Apple's Intelligence platform and Siri assistant.

However, tensions have escalated over the past year, particularly after OpenAI recruited former Apple design leader Jony Ive to assist in device development.

As OpenAI approaches its initial public offering, it has reportedly attracted around 400 employees from Apple, as mentioned in the lawsuit.

Apple's lawsuit claims that OpenAI has been stealing its trade secrets and confidential information at all levels, from technical staff to its chief hardware officer, in collaboration with business partners.

Apple is seeking the destruction of any proprietary materials obtained by OpenAI and demands that the company redesign its upcoming products to eliminate any copied technology.
