Aadhaar Authentication Required for LPG Cylinder Delivery Amid Supply Disruptions

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced that LPG consumers may need to complete Aadhaar-based authentication to continue receiving cylinder deliveries. This move aims to streamline distribution and prevent misuse, especially amid rising tensions in the Middle East affecting supply chains. While some misinformation has circulated regarding KYC updates, the ministry clarified that only those who have not completed the process need to do so. Aadhaar Authentication Required for LPG Cylinder Delivery Amid Supply Disruptions

Mandatory Aadhaar Authentication for LPG Consumers

Consumers of LPG may soon be required to undergo Aadhaar-based authentication to ensure they continue receiving their cylinder deliveries. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced that all domestic LPG users must complete biometric Aadhaar verification to enhance distribution efficiency and prevent misuse. Under the revised protocol, the delivery of LPG cylinders could be contingent upon verifying customer information through Aadhaar in certain situations, making it crucial for users to verify their KYC status.

This initiative aims to guarantee that subsidies and supplies are directed to legitimate beneficiaries while increasing system transparency, especially in light of the escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the US, and Iran, which has resulted in hoarding of LPG cylinders.

However, there have been concerns regarding this directive, as misinformation circulated on social media suggested that all LPG customers must update their KYC information. The ministry clarified that this recent communication is not a new mandate but part of ongoing efforts to promote the completion of the authentication process. They stated, “The recent post by the ministry is part of the Government's continuous efforts to encourage more LPG consumers to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication.”

Clarification on KYC Updates

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has specified that Aadhaar-based biometric authentication (eKYC) is only necessary for those LPG consumers who have not yet completed the process, not for all users. The eKYC requirement is applicable solely to those who have yet to fulfill it. Customers who are not part of the PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) and have already completed their eKYC are not required to repeat the process. For PMUY beneficiaries, eKYC must be completed once every financial year, specifically to receive targeted Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) subsidies after seven refills, typically during the eighth and ninth refills.

Steps to Complete Your Pending eKYC

If your KYC is not verified, it is essential to complete it to avoid delays in receiving your LPG cylinder. To finalize your KYC, follow these steps:

  • Download your LPG provider’s app.

  • Install the Aadhaar FaceRD app.

  • Log in using your registered mobile number or LPG ID.

  • Select the e-KYC or Aadhaar authentication option.

  • Input your Aadhaar details and ensure your mobile number is linked.

  • Proceed with face authentication via the FaceRD app.

  • Submit and confirm the process.

The ongoing crisis in the Middle East, primarily driven by the conflict involving Israel, the US, and Iran, has significantly disrupted crude oil supply, which is essential for LPG production. India relies on imports for nearly 60% of its LPG needs, much of which is transported through the Strait of Hormuz, a route that has faced constraints following US-Israel strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions.
