Emerging Artist Commemorates Dr. Bhupen Hazarika with Grand Statue
Celebrating a Legend
Nalbari, Nov 8: Nayan Kalita, an emerging talent from Barkuriha village in Nalbari district, is currently putting the finishing touches on a seven-foot tall fiber statue dedicated to the legendary Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, in honor of his birth centenary.
The statue, depicting Dr. Hazarika performing with a microphone, is expected to be completed in just a few days. It will be placed at a rural library located in Sonkuriha village. Kalita has dedicated the last month to this artistic endeavor.
Demonstrating his artistic prowess, Kalita has previously created statues and busts of 20 notable figures, including Mahatma Gandhi, Neel Pawan Baruah, and Harinarayan Dutta Baruah.
During the lockdown, he gained recognition for his unique portrait of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, crafted using flour and tree leaves along the banks of the Pagladia river, which earned him a spot in the India Book of Records.
As a teacher at a private school, Kalita found the extended closure during the lockdown allowed him to focus more on his painting and sculpting.
His talent first came to light when he sculpted a bust of his mother in his home courtyard. He has also created portraits of notable figures such as former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and journalist Homen Borgohain.
