Indian football enthusiasts may soon find relief as the uncertainty surrounding the broadcasting and streaming rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is nearing resolution. Zee Entertainment Enterprises has confirmed that they are in discussions with FIFA, the global governing body of football, to secure the rights to air this prestigious event in India. With only 16 days remaining until the tournament kicks off, clarity on the rights acquisition has been elusive. However, hope is on the horizon as Zee has introduced a new lineup of sports channels under the Unite8 brand. This new portfolio will feature four channels:

  • Unite8 Sports 1 and Unite8 Sports 1 HD in Hindi
  • Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD in English
During the announcement, Zee confirmed their ongoing negotiations with FIFA, stating, "The company is in talks with FIFA to broadcast and stream the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in India." Yet, details regarding the financial aspects of the deal remain undisclosed.

Challenges in Securing Broadcasting Rights

Why Was There No Broadcaster for FIFA World Cup 2026 in India?

The stalemate over the broadcasting rights for the tournament in India stemmed from financial disagreements. According to a report, FIFA initially sought $100 million from Indian broadcasters for the rights to both the 2026 and 2030 tournaments. This demand was later lowered to $60 million, matching the price at which the rights were sold in 2022. Reports also indicated that Jiostar was in negotiations but only offered $20 million. Sony also explored the possibility but ultimately chose not to submit a bid. The situation escalated to the Delhi High Court after a petition was filed regarding the issue. Prasar Bharati (Doordarshan) responded to the court, stating that the responsibility did not lie with them. The 2026 World Cup is set to commence on June 11, with the final scheduled for July 19, taking place across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
