Mumbai, May 5: Zahaan Hemrajani has successfully secured his fourth consecutive O’pen Skiff U17 National title, showcasing an impressive performance throughout eight races that varied from light winds to moderate breezes with small to medium waves.

He achieved victory in seven out of the eight races, with only a penalized fifth place affecting his overall score, resulting in a net total of 7.0 points, marking the most outstanding series score in the fleet.

The sole imperfection in his otherwise flawless performance came with a unique twist. In a fiercely competitive race, Zahaan surged from behind to finish first in what appeared to be a photo finish, only to be penalized for making contact with the committee boat mark at the finish line, resulting in a fifth-place score. Fortunately, the discard rule allowed him to set this aside. His ability to fight back in that race, despite the penalty, highlights the competitive spirit that characterized his sailing throughout the week.

This achievement is a testament to a year of focused development within the 24Seven Sailing program, guided by coaches Amish, Rigo, and Umesh. Zahaan has been honing his technical skills, particularly improving his upwind speed in lighter winds and choppy conditions, while also enhancing his tactical awareness. His ability to judge laylines and identify the best positions on the racecourse has become a hallmark of his racing at this level.

What distinguishes this four-year streak of national titles is not just the victories, but the consistent intent behind them. Competing at the Learning to Win stage, Zahaan is cultivating the competitive habits that differentiate good sailors from elite performers: viewing each race as a learning opportunity rather than a judgment, and addressing challenges with precision instead of retreat.

With the Euro 3 event in Warnemünde and the World Championship in Calasetta, Italy approaching, this national title reinforces his trajectory. The foundation is solid, and the ambition is evident.

“Zahaan is precisely where he needs to be at this moment. With focused work on speed and a continued evolution in how he evaluates performance, we are not merely achieving better results — we are developing a stronger athlete,” stated Amish, the head mentor.
