Celebrating Youth Connections Through Sports

On Saturday, the Chinese Embassy in Washington organized an event dedicated to fostering youth friendships and promoting "pickleball diplomacy," attracting around 200 attendees, including American students, parents, and educators. The highlight of the evening was the premiere of a documentary that documented a student exchange trip to China.

The gathering included various cultural activities such as displays of traditional Chinese clothing, photo exhibitions, and zongzi-making workshops, culminating in the screening of a film that followed a youth pickleball delegation from Montgomery County, Maryland, during their visit to China in February 2026.

Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, emphasized the importance of such exchange programs in strengthening interpersonal connections through sports. He remarked that pickleball has fostered genuine friendships between youth in both nations, allowing them to learn from one another and experience a welcoming China, thereby building communication bridges.

"From ping-pong to pickleball, while the paddles may have changed, the desire for friendship between our peoples remains unwavering," Xie stated. He likened the relationship between China and the US to two players on a sports court, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and adherence to rules.

In light of recent diplomatic progress, Xie referenced a significant meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in Beijing, where they established a new vision for a "constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability," which he believes will guide bilateral relations for the next three years and beyond.

The ambassador also noted that the goal of bringing 50,000 American students to China for exchanges over five years had been achieved ahead of schedule, as highlighted in President Xi's recent communication with participants of the "A Shared Voyage: China-US Youth Friendship Program."

The documentary showcased students traveling through various regions, including Guangdong, Jiangxi, Henan, and Beijing, during the Spring Festival. Jeffrey Sullivan, Director of System-wide Athletics for Montgomery County Public Schools, remarked that the program has evolved beyond just sports, with the February delegation emphasizing student leadership as they prepared for the trip and led cultural sessions and pickleball practices.

Participants of the exchange described their experiences as enlightening. One student shared, "It was a very pleasant experience … It was definitely a big difference from what we see in the media. It was very nice to see. It was very beautiful." Coach Stacy Azizirad pointed out how pickleball has a unique ability to unite people, noting that some students who had never played the sport before developed a passion for it during the trip.

Parents also reflected on the lasting impact of the program, with one stating, "The impact of these last two years … to say life-changing, it truly has been life-changing. The friendships that my children have made … have truly been heartwarming." She mentioned that her son now teaches English to his Chinese friends via WeChat and that their family has already planned another trip to Beijing and Shanghai.

The event concluded with organizers expressing optimism that future generations will continue to leverage sports, especially pickleball, as a means of fostering international friendships and cultural exchanges.
