Youth Development in Pickleball: A Focus on Future Competitions in Indonesia
Investing in Young Talent for Pickleball
The surge in popularity of pickleball throughout Asia is starting to shape long-term athlete development initiatives, with local federations and regional associations increasingly channeling resources into nurturing young talent. As the sport gains traction at both school and community levels, various regions are prioritizing the establishment of structured pathways for future competitions.
In Indonesia, for instance, Pasuruan Regency is ramping up its efforts in preparation for the 2027 East Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov) by heavily investing in youth pickleball training. Every Saturday and Sunday morning, training sessions are being conducted at the SMK Negeri 1 Bangil courts, where young athletes are honing their technical skills, physical fitness, and mental readiness under the guidance of local coaches.
Notable players such as Manha, Bima, and Baim are receiving focused training as they are anticipated to be key members of Pasuruan Regency’s team for the upcoming provincial event. Head coach Slamet Kusrianto emphasized the importance of early preparation due to the competitive nature expected at the 2027 Porprov. “With the Porprov approaching, it’s crucial for athletes to start their preparations now, especially since several events were significant last year,” he stated.
Known affectionately as “Mbah Bogel,” the coach highlighted that the training regimen not only aims to enhance technical skills but also to foster emotional resilience and competitive awareness among the youth. The coaching team has noted that regular match exposure is vital, encouraging young athletes to engage in competitions throughout East Java to build their experience and confidence in high-pressure situations.
“To develop their mental and competitive abilities, the children are taking part in events across East Java,” Mbah Bogel remarked. The Indonesian Pickleball Federation (IPF) in Pasuruan Regency is particularly focusing on the men’s doubles and mixed doubles categories for the 2027 East Java Porprov. Officials believe that early preparation will facilitate stronger partnerships and tactical cohesion among players ahead of the provincial competition.
This growing emphasis on youth development mirrors the expanding footprint of pickleball in Indonesia, where the sport is increasingly being integrated into schools, community courts, and local tournaments. Coaches and administrators view grassroots initiatives as crucial for ensuring sustainable growth while enhancing competitiveness at regional events. As preparations progress over the next year, Pasuruan’s coaching staff is optimistic that consistent training and tournament participation will cultivate a new generation of players capable of competing effectively at the provincial level, thereby bolstering the region’s standing in Indonesian pickleball.
