Young Malaysian Pickleball Star Aims for Global Dominance
Irfan Kamil's Journey in Pickleball
At just 13 years old, Irfan Kamil Irwan Kamil from Malaysia is determined to reach the pinnacle of pickleball, a sport he embraced only a year ago. Previously a tennis player from Ipoh, Irfan transitioned to pickleball due to persistent rain that rendered outdoor tennis courts unplayable. He shared, “It was raining every day, so I couldn't play tennis. My father suggested we try pickleball for fun, and we ended up enjoying it immensely.”
What began as a casual pastime quickly evolved into a serious pursuit. After meeting a well-connected coach who recognized his potential, Irfan became inspired to pursue a professional career. He recalled, “I was frequently on Instagram, watching pro pickleball players, and I aspired to join their ranks.”
His dedication paid off when he clinched a gold medal in his first under-12 tournament, leading to a contract with ESM Pro Team, thanks to the founder Faizal Othman who saw his talent. Despite his swift ascent, Irfan remains fond of tennis, stating, “I still love tennis; it holds a special place in my heart.”
Now competing in adult tournaments, Irfan has set ambitious goals for himself. He expressed, “My dream is to become a professional pickleball player. I aim to be the Malaysian No. 1, then the Asian No. 1, and eventually the World No. 1, insyaAllah.”
Irfan has already made waves internationally, securing a gold medal at the PCL Asia Rising Stars under-19 team event in Hainan, China. He remarked, “I was thrilled with my performance in Hainan. I didn’t expect to win because of the high level of competition.” He focused on staying composed and performing to the best of his abilities.
Recently, he had the opportunity to train with some of the sport's legends, describing it as a remarkable experience. “It was an honor to play alongside my idols in pickleball and tennis. Meeting these great players felt surreal, as I had only seen them on TV as a child.”
His mixed doubles partner, Chan Yu Chi, highlighted Irfan's unique qualities. “Partnering with a young player is special. Opponents often underestimate him, but he can effectively counter their attacks. He is my best partner,” she praised. “His calm demeanor and patience are his strengths, and as he grows, his power and attacking game will only improve.”
Irfan is set to compete next at the Penang leg of the World Pickleball Championship Malaysia Series from April 16-19.
