Yograj Singh Backs Gautam Gambhir Amidst Criticism Following Historic Test Win
Support for Gambhir After Historic Victory
Yograj Singh, a former cricketer, has publicly defended India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, asserting that he should not face criticism as he is effectively fulfilling his responsibilities. Under Gambhir's leadership, India achieved a remarkable 336-run victory against England in the second Test at Edgbaston, marking their first-ever Test win at this historic venue.
Prior to this significant win, the team, led by Shubman Gill, had been under fire due to a disappointing performance in red-ball cricket, placing Gambhir in a challenging position. Yograj believes that this recent success silences the skeptics and expresses optimism that India will return home with a series victory.
Yograj's Comments on Gambhir's Coaching
"Indian players are consistently growing and improving their game. We will always support them. We should not speak about Gautam Gambhir because he is doing well. Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Rahul Dravid are giving back to cricket because they have received so much,"
“Even if our team loses the series, we should not demoralise them. If you lose, you will not be there to explain; if you win, you don't have to explain. We hope that we win the series under the captaincy of Shubman Gill,"
Gambhir faced scrutiny following the Indian national team's inconsistent performances in Test cricket, particularly after their five-wicket defeat to England in the opening match of the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle at Headingley, Leeds.
Despite the challenges, the 43-year-old coach has previously made a significant impact in white-ball cricket, leading the team to a Champions Trophy victory. However, doubts have been raised regarding his ability to instill a similar level of aggression in Test matches.
India had suffered defeats in seven of their last nine Test matches, including a 0–3 whitewash at home against New Zealand and a 3–1 series loss in Australia, along with the recent setback in Leeds.
Nevertheless, the team has displayed moments of brilliance, such as their commanding 265-run victory over Australia in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and narrowly escaping defeat in Brisbane due to weather interruptions. With the momentum gained from their historic win at Edgbaston, India is eager to maintain their winning streak as they head into the third Test at Lord’s, commencing Thursday, July 10.
