Worcestershire Secures Usama Mir on a Three-Year T20 Contract
Worcestershire Signs Pakistan Spinner Usama Mir
On July 29, Worcestershire announced the acquisition of Usama Mir, a leg-spinner from Pakistan, who has signed a three-year T20 contract.
According to the club's official website, Mir will join the Pears as an overseas player for the 2026 season and will be classified as a homegrown player starting in 2027.
The 29-year-old brings a wealth of international experience, having played for Pakistan in all formats and participated in various T20 leagues globally, including the Big Bash League in Australia, the Pakistan Super League, and The Hundred.
Mir is recognized for his precision and wicket-taking skills, which will enhance Worcestershire's spin bowling lineup and provide essential experience to the team.
During the first year of his contract, he will be counted as an overseas player, but in the subsequent two years, he will qualify as a local player due to residency rules, highlighting Worcestershire's strategic foresight.
Ashley Giles, the CEO of Worcestershire, expressed enthusiasm about the signing, stating, "We are excited to have Usama join us. He is a top-tier cricketer with the talent and mindset to make a significant impact at this level."
He added, "His transition to a homegrown player from 2027 provides us with excellent flexibility in squad management and demonstrates our dedication to building a competitive team for the future."
Head Coach Alan Richardson remarked that securing a player of Mir's caliber is a clear indication of the club's ambitions, saying, "This is a significant move for Worcestershire. The club has a proud legacy and a strong history of exceptional overseas signings. I am eager to see Usama in action. This signing reinforces our commitment to enhancing the squad with international talent while we continue to invest in our youth development and pathway system."
