Legal Battle Continues for Women Wrestlers

New Delhi: A Delhi court has responded to an appeal from four female wrestlers challenging the earlier decision that cleared former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment allegations.

The appeal, submitted on September 25, also contests the acquittal of Vinod Tomar, the former WFI assistant secretary, regarding charges of criminal intimidation.

Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh has issued notices to both Singh and Tomar, as well as the state authorities.

The next hearing is scheduled for October 9.

Earlier, on August 3, a magisterial court had acquitted Singh, a former BJP MP, in a case involving six women wrestlers, including renowned medalist Vinesh Phogat, citing insufficient evidence.

The court also dismissed the charges against Tomar.

In their recent plea, the wrestlers argue that the acquittal lacks legal grounding, claiming it is based on a "manifestly erroneous and selective appreciation" of the evidence presented. They assert that the judgment relied on outdated and stereotypical views regarding the behavior of sexual assault victims, rather than a thorough and fair evaluation of the evidence considering the victims' situations.
