Iran's World Cup Participation in Jeopardy

New Delhi: The future of Iran's football team in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 hangs in the balance as discussions are underway with FIFA to potentially relocate their matches from the United States to Mexico, driven by escalating security issues.

Mehdi Taj, the president of Iran's football federation, has confirmed these negotiations, emphasizing that safety is a critical concern. He remarked, “If [US President Donald] Trump cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we will definitely not travel to America,” in a message shared via the Iranian embassy's X account in Mexico. “We are in talks with FIFA to host Iran’s World Cup matches in Mexico.”

These security worries stem from the ongoing conflict following the US-Israel airstrikes on Iran that began in late February 2026, exacerbating regional tensions. Iran's sports minister has previously highlighted the gravity of the situation, suggesting that the national team may not be able to participate in the tournament as initially planned.

Earlier, President Trump acknowledged that while Iran would be permitted to compete, he recognized the delicate nature of the situation. He stated that the team is welcome but hinted that it might not be safe for them to play in the United States “for their own life and safety.”

Iran had successfully qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, becoming the first Asian team to secure a spot on March 25, 2025. According to the current schedule, they are slated to play two group matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.

However, the deteriorating geopolitical climate raises the possibility of an unprecedented withdrawal from the tournament. Such a move would be historic in the context of modern World Cup history and could necessitate a last-minute decision from FIFA regarding a replacement.

At this point, the Asian Football Confederation has stated that it has not received any formal notice of withdrawal. They also mentioned that the Iranian federation has expressed its intention to participate, although the rapidly evolving situation continues to cast doubt on their final decision.
