Argentina Prepares for a New Era Post-Messi

Buenos Aires: Fans of Argentina are optimistic about the future of their national team as Lionel Messi, the most significant player of the last two decades, prepares to say goodbye.

The 39-year-old football icon is set to play his last match for Argentina on Tuesday, facing Benin in a friendly at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, marking a significant chapter in the nation's football history.

Messi's departure leaves behind an incredible legacy, which includes the 2022 World Cup victory, two additional World Cup finals (2014, 2026), two Copa America titles (2021, 2024), an Olympic gold medal (2008), and a record 125 goals as the national team's all-time scorer.

His retirement from international football raises a crucial question: Will Argentina continue to compete at the highest level, or are they facing a potential drought of trophies similar to the 35-year gap that followed Diego Maradona's exit?

National coach Lionel Scaloni remarked, "Messi leaves behind something unparalleled. We must continue to play, but the unique feeling of having him on the field is irreplaceable. I've never witnessed anyone else express what he does on the pitch, and that is what we will miss."

Despite Messi's exit, Scaloni, who is in talks to extend his contract for another four years, remains hopeful: "The Argentine national team will persist. I have no doubt we will maintain a high standard."

In the initial two matches following the World Cup without Messi, Argentina showcased their potential with impressive wins against Bolivia (4-0) and Burkina Faso (7-0). While the opponents may not be top-tier, these games provided a glimpse into the team's promising future.

Alongside seasoned players like Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero, Enzo Fernandez, and Lautaro Martinez, a new generation of talent is emerging, featuring creative midfielders Nicolas Paz and Franco Mastantuono, as well as wingers Gianluca Prestianni and Leonel Flores.

Flores, a Boca Juniors youth product, made his professional debut just two months ago and has already gained experience with the senior national team.

Supporter Cristian Versalles, 55, expressed, "There’s a transition happening; we may need to adapt our style, not just think in terms of Messi and ten others, but as a cohesive unit," after watching the victory over Burkina Faso.

His son, Ramiro, 23, added, "With so many new players coming through, there’s definitely a fresh generation ready to take charge. Nico Paz is the one to watch." Paz, who plays for Italian club Como, was among the scorers.

At the friendly match, 10-year-old fan Uzzi Rivero, wearing the No. 19 jersey that Messi donned during his debut in 2005, shared, "I feel really sad that he’s no longer playing for Argentina." However, he dismissed concerns about a potential trophy-less future.

Another fan, Valentina Gago, 20, expressed her excitement for Argentina's future without Messi, stating, "My favorite player is Lautaro Martinez. While it’s not the same as having Messi, I still love him just the same."

With his goal against Burkina Faso, Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez has now become Argentina's third-highest all-time goal-scorer with 42 goals.

"As long as the players are committed to giving their all for the team, Argentina will remain a contender," Gago concluded.
