Abhishek Porel Arrested Amid Serious Allegations

Kolkata: Bengal cricketer Abhishek Porel, known for his stint with Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was taken into custody in Hooghly district following allegations from a medical student. She claimed that he engaged in sexual relations with her under the pretense of marriage, as reported by a police official on Tuesday.

A local court in Chinsurah has denied Porel bail, placing him in police custody for three days.

"A formal complaint was filed against him, leading to a court order for his arrest. He was apprehended late last night and presented in court today," stated Kunwar Bhushan Singh, the Superintendent of Police for Hooghly (Rural).

The Mogra police arrested Porel at his home in Dum Dum, located in North 24 Parganas district.

This arrest follows a directive from the Calcutta High Court on July 20, which mandated the police to detain the cricketer in relation to the case. The court also instructed the authorities to confiscate his electronic devices to prevent the sharing of the complainant's photographs.

Authorities have filed charges against Porel under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, according to sources.

The complaint, lodged by the medical student at Mogra police station on June 23, detailed a relationship lasting approximately three and a half years, during which they had intentions of marriage.

The woman further alleged that they had traveled abroad together, but Porel later refuted their relationship, prompting her to seek police intervention.

The complaint indicated that a dispute arose about a year and a half ago, escalating to police involvement, although no formal complaint was made at that time.

After the June complaint, police initiated an investigation and made several attempts to locate Porel at his residence in Chandannagar, but he was not found.

Following her appeal to the Calcutta High Court, the court ordered the police to arrest Porel. The legal proceedings also included claims of criminal intimidation and other offenses alongside the rape allegation.

Porel has previously denied the allegations against him, and responses from him and his family regarding his arrest are still pending.
