Disciplinary Actions for West Indies Players

Ranchi: During the second T20I match against India in Ranchi, West Indies cricketers Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford received official reprimands along with one demerit point each for violating the ICC Code of Conduct.

Powell's reprimand stemmed from his action of striking the ball with his bat after being dismissed, while Rutherford was penalized for expressing dissent towards an umpire's decision.

The ICC indicated that Powell's actions breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses the misuse of cricket equipment during international matches.

This incident took place in the sixth over of the West Indies innings after Powell was dismissed by Indian bowler Mayank Yadav.

On the other hand, Rutherford's infraction involved breaching Article 2.8, which pertains to showing dissent at an umpire's ruling. His outburst occurred in the 13th over when he vocally protested a delivery that he thought was wide but was deemed legitimate.

Both players acknowledged their violations and accepted the penalties suggested by Prakash Bhatt from the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, thus avoiding formal hearings.

The ICC confirmed that each player now has one demerit point on their disciplinary records, marking their first offence within a 24-month timeframe.

In terms of the match, captain Shai Hope delivered an explosive performance, scoring a century off just 45 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford contributed significantly with 84 runs from 37 balls. Their efforts led the West Indies to a remarkable six-wicket win over India, successfully chasing a challenging target of 250 runs, which is now the second-highest successful run chase in men's T20I history.

Hope and Rutherford's partnership of 120 runs for the fourth wicket set a record for the West Indies in T20Is and stands as the third-largest fourth-wicket partnership against India in this format.
