West Indies Cricket Celebrates 50 Years of World Cup Glory at CWI/WIPA Awards
A Grand Celebration of Cricket Excellence
Saint John's [Antigua and Barbuda], June 22: Cricket enthusiasts throughout the Caribbean and beyond are eagerly anticipating a remarkable event as Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) prepare for the 8th CWI/WIPA Awards. This glamorous gala will not only recognize the outstanding players of today but will also honor a monumental achievement in cricket history: the 50th anniversary of the West Indies' iconic victory at the inaugural ICC Cricket World Cup in 1975.
This year's Awards, set against a backdrop of rich tradition and contemporary success, promises to be a pivotal occasion in the realm of West Indies cricket. The gala will highlight the region's top talents across all formats—Test, ODI, and T20—and will include heartfelt tributes to the trailblazing heroes who paved the way to glory fifty years ago.
Kishore Shallow, the President of Cricket West Indies, expressed his excitement, stating, “This is a unique celebration of our current players and West Indies legends. We are thrilled to honor our living icons while recognizing the brilliance of our present stars who continue to uphold our legacy. Fifty years ago, the West Indies team, through their victory at the first ICC Men's World Cup, sparked a movement that transformed Caribbean sports. This gala is an opportunity to celebrate their legacy while acknowledging the resilience and accomplishments of our players today.”
The event will fittingly include a special tribute to the 1975 World Cup-winning team, whose legendary victory at Lord's is a defining moment in cricket history. Several members of that historic squad, including Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Sir Andy Roberts, will be present, alongside the current generation of West Indies players.
Wavell Hinds, President of WIPA, added, “The CWI/WIPA Awards serve as a powerful reminder of the pride, passion, and perseverance that characterize West Indies cricket. This celebration honors not only performance but also the relentless drive, unbreakable spirit, and lasting legacy of our players. At WIPA, we take pride in standing alongside our players—past, present, and future—in celebrating excellence both on and off the field.”
The gala is scheduled for Sunday at the esteemed Wyndham Grand Barbados.
