Wasim Jaffer Reflects on Early Encounter with Hardik Pandya
Recollections of Hardik Pandya's Early Days
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer shared memories of his first meeting with the talented all-rounder Hardik Pandya, highlighting how Pandya admired his batting technique during the early stages of his career nearly 12 years ago.
Hardik Pandya's Journey Before Fame
Before making his debut for Team India in 2016, Hardik underwent rigorous training in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). He debuted in first-class, List-A, and T20 formats in the 2013-14 season and joined the IPL in 2015. In his inaugural IPL season with the Mumbai Indians, he amassed 112 runs in eight innings, boasting an impressive strike rate of 180.65, showcasing his explosive batting and bowling skills.
Jaffer's Nostalgic Meeting
In a recent Instagram video, Jaffer reminisced about meeting Hardik during the Ranji Trophy season of 2014 or 2015. Hardik had previously named Jaffer as an inspiration at the BCCI Awards in Delhi. Jaffer recalled visiting cricketer Irfan Pathan's home for dinner, where he first encountered Hardik and his brother Krunal. He noted how Pathan held Hardik in high regard during his early domestic and IPL career.
"The first time I met him was during the 2014 or 2015 Ranji season. Mumbai were playing Baroda in Baroda. I was injured and not playing, but I traveled with the team. It was my last season with Mumbai before moving to Vidarbha. I remember going to Irfan's house for dinner, where I met Hardik and Krunal for the first time. Irfan introduced Hardik to me, saying he would soon be playing at a higher level. Hardik expressed his admiration for my batting style, which was very flattering. It's heartwarming that he still mentions me as an inspiration in front of prominent players, even though I made my mark primarily in First-Class cricket," Jaffer shared.
Jaffer's Remarkable Cricketing Career
From 2000 to 2008, Jaffer represented India in 31 Test matches, accumulating 1,944 runs in 58 innings with an average of 34.10, including five centuries and 11 fifties, with a top score of 211. His remarkable first-class cricket record, however, solidified his legendary status, with 19,410 runs in 260 matches at an average of 50.67, featuring 57 centuries and 91 fifties, and a highest score of 314*.
