Sehwag Raises Concerns Over Kohli's Decision

Former Indian opener and commentator Virender Sehwag has expressed doubts regarding the timing of Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket. This came after Kohli's impressive performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2025 match held at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on May 23.

On May 12, Kohli shocked the cricket world by announcing his retirement from Test cricket, concluding a remarkable 14-year career that included 123 matches for India. His announcement arrived just two weeks prior to the selection of the Indian squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, which is set to begin on June 12. Kohli shared his retirement news via his Instagram account.

Despite his recent form and fitness levels showcased in the IPL, the rationale behind Kohli's decision remains unclear. This has led to widespread speculation among fans and analysts about the reasons prompting the star batter to step away from Test cricket, particularly before such a significant tour.

Sehwag's Perspective on Kohli's Retirement

After the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Sehwag praised Kohli's aggressive innings but questioned his choice to retire from Test matches. He stated, "I believe he retired too soon from the Test format. Given his fitness, he could have easily played for another two years. Only Virat knows the reasons behind his decision."

"It's a personal choice for any player, possibly influenced by fatigue or other factors. However, based on his recent performance and energy levels, it seems he could have continued for a couple more years," Sehwag added.

Kohli scored a brisk 43 runs off 25 balls, contributing to an 80-run opening partnership with Phil Salt, who scored 62 off 32 balls, in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's ambitious chase of 232 runs. Unfortunately, the middle order faltered, leading to a total of 189 all out in 19.5 overs after being well-placed at 163/4.

In the ongoing IPL 2025 season, Kohli stands as the top run-scorer for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, accumulating 548 runs with an impressive average of 60.88 and a strike rate of 145.35 across 12 matches.

Kohli's Remarkable Test Career

Virat Kohli made his Test debut for India against the West Indies in 2011 and quickly became one of the most celebrated players in the format. He ranks as the fourth highest run-scorer for India in Test cricket, amassing 9,230 runs, which includes 30 centuries and 31 fifties, at an average of 46.85 over 123 matches.

Kohli captained the Indian Test team from 2011 until he stepped down following a series defeat against South Africa in 2022. He holds the record as the most successful Indian Test captain, achieving 40 victories in 68 matches, with a win percentage of 58.82.

Additionally, Kohli is recognized as the highest run-scorer for India as a Test captain, with 5,864 runs, including 20 centuries and 18 fifties, at an average of 54.80 in 113 innings. He is one of only two players, alongside a former South African captain, to score 20 or more centuries while leading in Test matches.
