Kohli's Stellar Comeback in IPL 2026

Virat Kohli, the star batter for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), made an impressive return to competitive cricket during the IPL 2026 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on March 28. Kohli scored an unbeaten 69 runs off 38 deliveries, featuring 5 fours and 6 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 181.58. His performance was pivotal in helping RCB chase down a target of 202 runs with 26 balls remaining, completing the chase in just 15.4 overs.

Kohli's innings included a significant 101-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, who contributed 61 runs off 26 balls, and a 53-run collaboration with skipper Rajat Patidar, who scored 31 runs off 12 balls, setting the stage for a comfortable victory.

Kohli's Continued Dominance in White-Ball Cricket

This match marked Kohli's return to T20 cricket after nearly a year, with his last appearance being in the IPL 2025 final against Punjab Kings. Despite the break, he showcased his dominance in white-ball formats, having played three ODI series and two matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy prior to the IPL season.

In those three ODI series against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, Kohli accumulated 616 runs, including three centuries and three fifties, averaging 88 across nine matches. His performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 131 and 77 against Andhra and Gujarat respectively, further highlighted his excellent form leading into the IPL.

Record-Breaking Performance

Kohli's innings in the IPL 2026 opener not only secured a win for RCB but also saw him break several records. He achieved his 21st IPL fifty, the highest by any player in the tournament's history, and became the first player to surpass 4000 runs in IPL run chases, with 4027 runs out of a total of 8730 runs coming while chasing.

Additionally, he recorded his 28th T20 half-century at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the most by any player at a single venue in T20 history, reinforcing his status as a dominant force in the format.

Kohli's Preparedness and Future Goals

Before the match, there were questions about Kohli's readiness after his long absence from T20 cricket. However, he dispelled any doubts with his commanding performance. In a post-match interview, he stated that he never returns underprepared, emphasizing how breaks help him maintain mental and physical readiness.

Kohli expressed, "I knew as long as I have the rhythm, and I’ve put enough work physically behind the scenes with my fitness, things should come together nicely. The breaks help me mentally. I stay fresh, I stay excited." He aims to extend his international career until the 2027 World Cup, focusing on performing at the highest level.

Looking Ahead

The IPL 2026 season is crucial for Kohli, as selectors will closely monitor his performance to assess his role in upcoming international matches, particularly with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon.
