Kohli's Aspirations for the 2027 ODI World Cup

Former captain of Team India, Virat Kohli, has recently shared his thoughts regarding his potential participation in the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup, which is set to take place in October-November next year across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

After retiring from T20Is and Test cricket within a year, Kohli has concentrated solely on ODIs, aiming to extend his remarkable international career until this significant event, which may mark his final appearance on the world stage. Despite stepping back from other formats, he continues to be a formidable player in the 50-over game.

Current Performance in IPL

Currently, Kohli is competing in the IPL season with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he recently scored a century against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur. This performance has further demonstrated his determination to excel in cricket on his own terms.

Desire to Contribute Meaningfully

In a recent episode of the RCB Podcast, Kohli expressed his desire to participate in the World Cup, emphasizing that he wants to contribute positively to the team and environment. He stated that his focus is on making a meaningful impact rather than seeking validation.

Kohli remarked, "Regarding the 2027 World Cup discussions, we are still in mid-2026. I have been asked if I want to play in 2027. If I am playing, I want to represent India and be part of a World Cup. However, it is essential that I can add value to the team. If I feel pressured to constantly prove my worth, then that is not the right environment for me."

Commitment to Excellence

Kohli further elaborated on his mindset, stating that his primary goal is to give his best for the team rather than to meet external expectations. He said, "When I step onto the field, I give my all. I prepare for every match as if it could be my last, and I am committed to doing everything possible for the team."

He added, "If I find myself in a situation where I need to prove my worth, then that place is not for me. I returned to play because I love the game and want to focus on that passion."

Performance Metrics in IPL 2026

The ongoing IPL season serves as a vital opportunity for Kohli to maintain his form and consistency, which is crucial for his role in India's ODI plans leading up to the 2027 World Cup. In IPL 2026, he has scored 484 runs, including one century and three fifties, with an impressive average of 53.77 and a strike rate of 165.75 over 12 matches.
