Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant Shine as Delhi Secures Narrow Victory in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Delhi's Thrilling Win Over Gujarat
Bengaluru: In a gripping encounter, Delhi edged out Gujarat by seven runs in their Elite Group D clash during the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Friday, thanks to impressive half-centuries from star players Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant.
Kohli, who was named Player of the Match, scored 77 runs off 61 balls, while Pant contributed 70 runs from 79 deliveries, helping Delhi post a total of 254 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs.
Despite a promising start, Gujarat fell short, finishing their innings at 247 runs in 47.4 overs.
Kohli and Pant's performances were the highlights of the match, showcasing contrasting styles. Kohli entered the game after the early dismissal of opener Priyansh Arya and quickly found his rhythm.
After blocking the first delivery, Kohli struck a beautiful straight drive for four runs off pacer Chintan Gaja, signaling his excellent form.
While other Delhi batsmen struggled against Gujarat's bowling attack, Kohli displayed remarkable fluency in his preferred format.
He hit a six off Gaja and followed it with a stunning flick for four off Arzan Nagwaswalla, quickly shifting into high gear.
The seasoned player reached his fifty in just 29 balls, which included 10 fours and a six, showcasing his exceptional shot-making skills.
Kohli brought up his 85th List A half-century with a boundary over covers off Ravi Bishnoi.
A second consecutive century seemed likely, but a well-executed delivery from left-arm spinner Vishal Jayswal (4/42) led to his stumping.
At that point, Delhi was at 108 for four, needing a boost to stabilize their innings.
Earlier, Jayswal had also dismissed Nitish Rana and Arpit.
However, Delhi's captain Pant stepped up, tempering his aggressive instincts to anchor the innings.
Pant's first sign of innovation came after he reached fifty in 64 balls, attempting a scoop shot off Bishnoi and later trying a similar shot off Gaja.
Ultimately, Pant's impatience led to his dismissal by Jayswal, ending a crucial 73-run partnership with Harsh Tyagi, who scored 40.
Simarjeet and Ishant Sharma added 19 runs for the last wicket, ensuring Delhi crossed the 250-run threshold.
Brief Scores:
Delhi: 254/9 in 50 overs (Virat Kohli 77, Rishabh Pant 70, Harsh Tyagi 40; Vishal Jayswal 4/42)
