Vinesh Phogat's Bold Stand Against WFI

Vinesh Phogat has taken a strong stance against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), asserting that they are attempting to force her out of the sport. Her comments followed the WFI's decision to declare her ineligible for the National Open Ranking tournament in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, until June 26, 2026, due to a mandatory six-month notice period for athletes returning from retirement under anti-doping regulations. Vinesh contends that this rule does not pertain to her, as she had already notified United World Wrestling (UWW) of her intent to return to competition after her retirement.

During a meeting with the WFI President, Vinesh expressed her frustrations, stating, "I received a show-cause notice on Friday night and was given 14 days to respond. With a son to care for and weight management to consider, I provided a brief reply due to time constraints. I assured them that a detailed response would follow within 14 days. I requested to compete in the meantime, but the WFI insisted on a detailed reply first. They mentioned forming a committee to review my case, but I hope it convenes before the 2028 Olympics. It seems the WFI is trying to prevent my participation in the Asian Games and is pushing for my retirement," she shared with the media.

Acknowledging Mistakes in Doping Test

'I Made A Mistake' - Vinesh on missed Dope test.

Vinesh has submitted a written response to the WFI regarding the show-cause notice, admitting to an oversight in missing a doping test. However, she clarified that she had previously informed the International Testing Agency (ITA) about this missed test in December of last year. She stated that if any discrepancies arise in her forthcoming detailed reply, the WFI is welcome to take action against her.

"I had informed the ITA about the missed test and they permitted me to participate in competitions starting January 1, 2026. I told the WFI that if my detailed reply contains any inaccuracies, they can take action against me. I acknowledge the missed test was my fault," she added. Vinesh also mentioned that she has undergone further testing and communicated her desire to compete to both the WFI and the international federation, but claims the WFI has not responded. "After the missed test, I was tested again. On December 12, I informed the WFI and the international federation of my intention to return to competition. Despite a five-month gap, the WFI did not respond. They accepted my registration for the Open National Ranking tournament and processed my fees, but later issued a show-cause notice to prevent my participation. The WFI operates like a dictatorship, fearing my potential to win medals again," she stated.

Finding Strength Through Motherhood

'My Son Gives Me Courage To Fight' - Vinesh

Vinesh shared that the aftermath of the Paris Olympic controversy left her heartbroken, but her son has restored joy in her life and provided her with the strength to confront the challenges she faces. "My son has mended my broken heart. After being deemed ineligible for the finals, I felt emotionally drained. However, my son has brought happiness back into my life. The motivation to fight against the system comes from him. They say a child is a divine gift. I am not infringing on anyone's rights; I want everything to be decided on the mat," she expressed.

Reflecting on her emotional state after the Olympics, she admitted, "I felt disconnected from my family and wanted solitude. Then Kridhav came into our lives. We were expecting a girl, but now I do everything for Kridhav. Every meal I eat and every training session I undertake is for him. I think about how he will perceive my actions as he grows older. I want him to learn the importance of hard work and fighting for the right causes. I aspire to still be on the wrestling mat when he turns five, so he can witness my battles firsthand," Vinesh concluded.

Vinesh's Return to Wrestling

Why Vinesh Returned From Retirement

Discussing her decision to return from retirement, Vinesh remarked, "I was uncertain about making a comeback due to emotional exhaustion. I felt I had nothing more to give to wrestling. It felt like being trapped between a rock and a hard place. My initial goal was to regain my fitness. Motherhood transforms you into a different person. Now, I feel optimistic about my return because I know Kridhav is watching me. I dream of competing in the Olympics and having my son cheer for me, which serves as a significant motivation."
