Varun Chopra Turns the Tide to Win IGPL Invitational

Varun Chopra commenced the final day of the AM Green IGPL Invitational, hosted by Vimtra Chennai Lions GC, trailing the leader Shiv Kapur by three strokes. However, Chopra delivered an impressive performance, finishing with a 4-under 68, which secured him a two-shot victory over Kapur, who ended the day at 1-over 73. Chopra's consistent rounds of 66-68-68 culminated in a total score of 14-under 202, as reported in a press release from IGPL.

Kapur's Strong Start Falters

Kapur had an exceptional start with a stunning 62 on the opening day and followed it up with a 69, maintaining a three-shot lead. However, the final round saw a shift in momentum, allowing Chopra to clinch the title and the first prize of Rs. 22.50 lakhs. Kapur finished in second place with a total of 12-under 204, earning Rs. 15 lakhs. This victory marked Chopra's inaugural IGPL title, adding to his earlier success at the APGA Tour championship and a commendable performance at the Morocco Rising Stars Marrakech.

Highlights from Other Competitors

Sachin Baisoya secured third place with a final round of 68, totaling 8-under. Meanwhile, five players, including Veer Ganapathy, Gaganjeet Bhullar, Varun Parikh, Aryan Roopa Anand, and Tushar Pannu, all tied for fifth place with scores of 71 or 68.

Auro Goa Eagles Triumph in Team Competition

Chopra's outstanding performance also contributed to the Auro Goa Eagles winning the team title, finishing with a total score of 23-under. The RVR Delhi Blue Bulls, led by Kapur, came in second at 21-under, while Sachin Baisoya's efforts helped the Hyderabad Firebird secure third place at 13-under, tying with Flying Man Kolkata, where Varun Parikh excelled.

Final Round Insights

Chopra began the final round with a birdie and gained momentum with three birdies in four holes from the fifth to the eighth. In contrast, Kapur struggled to respond to Chopra's advances. By the turn, Chopra had taken the lead and maintained his composure on the back nine, while Kapur's putter failed him. After a 4-under front nine, Chopra birdied the 14th but dropped a shot on the 16th, finishing the last two holes with pars, which proved sufficient as Kapur could not capitalize on the opportunity. Kapur, who had an impressive first day, was unable to secure any birdies on the final day, ultimately settling for pars and a bogey on the Par-4 12th, resulting in a 73.

Ravi Kumar, a debutant at IGPL, finished with a score of 70, while young talent Kanav Chauhan shot a 71, both tying for ninth place to complete the top ten finishers.
