Valencia to Introduce Municipal Pickleball Courts Amid Growing Popularity

Valencia is taking a significant step towards promoting pickleball by constructing its first public courts at the Quatre Carreres sports complex. This initiative, approved through local participatory budgeting, aims to meet the rising demand for pickleball facilities in the city. With a budget of €105,000, the project will create four new courts on unused land, enhancing community access to this rapidly growing sport. As pickleball gains popularity across Spain, local advocates are optimistic about its future, drawing parallels with its success in North America. The establishment of these courts is expected to foster greater participation and interest in pickleball among residents.

Valencia's New Pickleball Facilities

The city of Valencia is preparing to establish its first public pickleball courts as part of an initiative to promote the sport's increasing appeal in Spain. As reported by a local news outlet, the city council has initiated a tender for the construction of four pickleball courts at the Quatre Carreres sports complex. This development follows the approval of a proposal from residents under the 2022 participatory budgeting program, DecidimVLC.

These new courts will occupy a nearly 700-square-meter area of currently unused land within the complex, adjacent to an existing artificial turf football field. The project has been budgeted at €105,000 and is anticipated to take approximately four months to complete once construction commences.

Pickleball, a racket sport that merges elements of tennis and padel, has been steadily gaining traction in Spain. However, in Valencia, access to dedicated facilities has been limited, with courts primarily available at select private clubs and multi-sport venues at the University of Valencia.

Originating in the United States on an island near Seattle, pickleball was invented by three friends who adapted a badminton net, using a plastic ball and wooden paddles. With the introduction of public courts, Valencia aims to broaden access to the sport and cater to the growing interest among the community.

Pickleball's popularity is surging across Spain. Recently, Mike Hess, the founder of Pickleball Spain, discussed the establishment of the organization and its vision. He noted, "Spain is definitely becoming a pickleball destination. Known as the 'Florida of Europe,' it attracts many winter visitors who enjoy the pleasant weather, sun, and coastline, making it ideal for outdoor activities like pickleball." He expressed his ambition to replicate the sport's success seen in the US and Canada, highlighting the similar demographics in Europe. Hess is also assisting other European nations in developing their pickleball programs and hopes to organize a World Tournament soon, aiming to cultivate players capable of competing with top North American athletes.
