Vaibhav Suryavanshi Shatters Records in Vijay Hazare Trophy Before National Award Ceremony

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 14-year-old cricket sensation, made history with a record-breaking 190 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, leading Bihar to an unprecedented total. However, he missed the second round of the tournament to receive the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar from President Droupadi Murmu. His coach confirmed that he will also miss the remainder of the tournament to prepare for the upcoming U19 World Cup. This recognition underscores his potential as one of India's brightest young talents.

Record-Breaking Performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Indian cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi made headlines during Bihar's inaugural match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025/26 season against Arunachal Pradesh, held at the JSCA Oval Ground in Ranchi on December 24. The 14-year-old showcased his extraordinary talent by scoring an impressive 190 runs off just 84 balls, featuring 16 fours and 15 sixes, achieving a remarkable strike rate of 226.19. This performance led Bihar to a staggering total of 574/6 in 50 overs, marking the highest score ever recorded in List A cricket.

Suryavanshi's innings not only drew comparisons to cricket legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma but also set multiple records, including becoming the youngest List A centurion, the fourth fastest to reach a century in VHT history, and the fastest player to score 150 runs in List A cricket (in just 56 balls). His remarkable feat also included the joint-fourth most boundaries in a single VHT innings.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi Misses Second Round of VHT

Following his record-setting performance, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was notably absent from Bihar's lineup for the second Plate match against Manipur at the JSCA International Complex Stadium in Ranchi. The young cricketer had traveled to New Delhi to receive the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar from President Droupadi Murmu. His childhood coach, Manish Ojha, confirmed that Suryavanshi had to attend the ceremony early in the morning, which conflicted with the match schedule.

"Vaibhav won't participate in today's match as he is in Delhi for the Prime Minister's National Children's Award ceremony, where he will be honored. He needed to report at 7 AM for the event," Ojha stated.

Recognition and Future Prospects

The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar is a significant national accolade recognizing Suryavanshi's exceptional contributions to sports at such a young age. His rapid ascent in cricket at just 14 years old emphasizes his potential as one of India's most promising young athletes and a source of inspiration for aspiring cricketers nationwide.

Unfortunately, Suryavanshi will not only miss the second round but also the remainder of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His coach revealed that he will join the Indian U19 team for preparatory camps ahead of the U19 World Cup, which are expected to take place at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru later this week.

"He will miss the rest of the Vijay Hazare Trophy to prepare for the U19 World Cup and will join the Indian team for training matches," Ojha added.

Upcoming U19 Men's World Cup

The U19 Men's World Cup 2026 is set to occur from January 15 to February 6, featuring 16 teams competing for the coveted junior title. Team India, led by captain Ayush Mhatre, aims to secure their sixth title in this tournament. They are placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, the USA, and New Zealand.

India's campaign will commence against the USA at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on the opening day of the tournament. After a disappointing loss in the Asia Cup final to Pakistan, the Indian U19 team is determined to bounce back.
