Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's India Debut Uncertain Ahead of T20I Series Against England

As India gears up for the T20I series against England, Shreyas Iyer has hinted that young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may have to wait for his debut. Despite a stellar performance in IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi's opportunity remains uncertain. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson's struggles in the recent series against Ireland raise questions about his form. The upcoming matches promise to be exciting as India looks to solidify its lineup against a formidable England team.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Prospects

Before the T20I series against England, Shreyas Iyer commented on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's potential debut, suggesting that the young player may need to wait for his chance. Sooryavanshi did not participate in the matches against Ireland, remaining on the bench as Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson opened the innings. In a media interaction, Iyer praised the 15-year-old talent but refrained from confirming if he would make his debut in the first T20I against England. He stated, "Our hands are tied. This is very private. We can't let everyone know what combination we are going to play because the opponents would also find out. He's a brilliant prodigy and whenever he gets an opportunity to play, he will perform brilliantly," Iyer remarked.

Sooryavanshi earned his spot on the national team following an impressive performance in IPL 2026, where he scored 776 runs in 16 innings, including a century and five half-centuries, along with hitting 72 sixes. Prior to heading to the UK, he showcased his skills with India A, notably scoring 94 runs off just 29 balls in the final of a tri-series against Sri Lanka. If India retains its current opening pair, Sooryavanshi may have to bide his time for an opportunity.

Sanju Samson's Struggles Against Ireland

Sanju Samson had a disappointing outing in the T20I series against Ireland, failing to score in both matches as he was dismissed on the first ball each time by Jai Moondra. Despite being India's standout performer in the last three games of the 2026 T20 World Cup, he is expected to retain his place in the lineup. Abhishek Sharma, on the other hand, scored a quick 50 off 20 balls in the first match against Ireland, although he too fell for a first-ball duck in the second match.

India is set to face England in a series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs, with the T20 matches scheduled for July 1, 4, 7, 9, and 11, followed by the ODIs on July 14, 16, and 19.
